BANDON, ORE - Bandon voters have until 8:00 p.m. on November 3, to cast their ballot to approve or deny a property tax levy that would help fund two positions on their local police force.

The ballots have already gone out to local residents of Bandon for Measure 6-128 which would help fund 24-hour police protection.

The Department currently has six officers, but according to City Manager Matt Winkel, after this Fiscal Year the City is only guaranteed the funds for four officers.

Full, around the clock, police protection would not be guaranteed and Winkel says that is a concern given their remote location. "We're kind of by ourselves over here, with everybody being a half hour away and with the problems the County has with their Police it's very difficult to have much back-up if there is an emergency. And so having somebody on patrol at all times is pretty important."

The City believes they need to generate about $200,000 per year to cover the cost of training, equipment and salary for two officers.

The five-year property tax levy would cost taxpayers an average of about 56-cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Winkel says if your home's assessed value is $100,000 then your cost for the levy would be $56 a year. "So our feeling is that, while it's a lot of money, compared to what can happen when you don't have that 24-hour police protection it can be very serious."

Ballots can be dropped off at Bandon City Hall or a the Coos County Elections Office, or you can still mail them before Friday. They just need to be in no later than 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.
