Human trafficking to be tackled at local workshop
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY News
NORTH BEND, Ore. - Reports of human trafficking around the nation and around the globe are becoming more and more prevalent.
Which is why a local non-profit organization is tackling the issue head on to prevent it from becoming one here in Coos County. The Zonta Club of Coos Bay Area will be hosting a "Human Trafficking Workshop" this Wednesday at the Mill Casino-Hotel. Representatives from the Oregon Human Trafficking Task Force in Portland will be leading the workshop, to help educate folks on the signs, the victims, and how to stop human trafficking. "Zonta International is a service organization that is, the mission is to advance the status of women. Human trafficking is definitely a huge part of violence against women and so the thought of providing some sort of awareness training would be a good start," says Zonta Member Terri Turi. Both Turi and fellow Zontian Jan Delimont say in their research for this event, they discovered instances of human trafficking here in Coos County. "We found that, in talking with some of the local health care people that, there have been a couple of fathers that have tried to sell their daughters at a local bar. 20 homeless, unaccompanied youth ages 11 to 17 were identified in January, this was 2009, during a one night street survey in Coos County," says Delimont. The workshop, which runs from 1:30 to 5 is open to the public at the Mill Casino-Hotel's Salmon Room. The cost is $10 dollars. Prior to the workshop, there will be a short presentation at the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce IBO Luncheon. Yo can register at the door or call 396-3329 for more information. |
