Police: 'This situation came very close to ending tragically'
By Glen Beeby KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- A situation for one Roseburg police officer could have turned bad after a suspect pulled out a gun during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon. Police had received a call that a stolen car was in the K-Mart parking lot, and by the time authorities arrived the car was gone. Police then went to a residence on Plateau Drive where Adam Smith, 21, was trying to pull out of a driveway. Sgt. Aaron Dunbar of the Roseburg Police Department said, "The driver of the vehicle exited the car, and when he did he reached into his waistband and and grabbed a handgun and simultaneously took off running around the corner of the house." Sergeant Greg Fetsch followed the suspect, where he found him without a gun and arrested him. After searching the area, officers found a gun on the ground where Smith was apprehended. "This situation came very close to ending tragically. The officer showed restraint and we are glad things turned out the way they did, but it was real close to turning out some other way." Smith was lodged at the Douglas County Jail on several different charges, including Attempting to Elude and Unlawful Use of a Firearm. |
