Digging to learn

NORTH BEND, Ore. - North Bend middle schoolers show some enthusiasm for history Thursday, as they dig up a mock archaeological site.

Eighth graders spent their third period history class digging up mock artifacts from a field they taped of earlier this week.

U.S. and World History teacher Austin Bentley says this is the first time he's done a project like this one and the kids responded well.

"History tends to be very dry and I wanted them to see that much of history doesn't have to be so I wanted them to understand where we get all the history we talk about and most of what comes into our textbooks and into our classroom comes from someone out here digging in the ground and finding artifacts."

Students say they're glad to catch a break from the classroom.

"I think it's better going outside and doing something like this because sitting in the classroom is boring."

Bentley says he hopes to do this again with his class next year to continue and get kids excited about history, which he says can be quite the task.
