CB Visitor Center cashes in on solar panels
By KCBY StaffCOOS BAY, Ore. -The City of Coos Bay is going green with it's new Visitors Information Center and a recent grant from Pacific Power is helping out. The grant is for $47,500 and is intended to be used for the installation of solar panels on the roof of the new Visitors Center Building. According to Public Works Director, Jim Hossley, "It's expected to generate a little over 15 kilo-watt hours a day, which is about half of what a normal single family residence uses each day." Hossley says the city is trying to move in the direction of renewable energy and is taking the lead with two of it's current projects, the Visitors Center and the new Fire Hall, which will be the first city-owned building to use solar panels. The panels on the Visitors Center are expected to save the city $1,300 a year on power bills. And so far, Hossley says the building is right on schedule. "We've got framing's up and all the concrete's poured and folks will see sidewalks being torn out, new sidewalks being put in a lot of concrete work still left to do but it's going good." The Visitors Information Center right off HWY 101 is expected to be finished by June 2010. Most Popular |
