North Bend - With the recent layoffs in the Coos County Sheriff's Department, officers are now getting trained on how to fulfill a number of roles including on the search and rescue front.

This week, the Coos County Sheriff's Department enlisted the help of the Lane County Sheriff's Office to provide training for search managers in a three-day class at the North Bend Library.

A few dozen officers have been reviewing materials on how to best search and detect a missing person and how to deal with different types of subjects like those with dementia or Alzheimer's.

Instructor John Miller is using new curriculum from Emergency Response International, which is becoming the standard practice in the Northwest.

With the county cutbacks, Coos County Sheriff Andy Jackson says they're looking to teach those who are left how to do several jobs.

The department will now train their search and rescue volunteers and will then focus on getting additional training for investigative work.
