BANDON, Ore. -The Annual Coquille Valley Christmas Bird Count is about to take flight this weekend, January 2, and organizers are looking for folks in the valley to help them keep count.

Bird counting is a time honored tradition, and here on the  coast, observers are preparing for Saturday's field count.

12 teams have been organized to scout the area but according to bird counter, Harv Schubothe, folks can contribute just by simply observing their bird feeders in their yard.

"Got Bandon covered pretty well, but our circle goes all the way 15 miles through Coquille and on to Myrtle Point and it would be nice to have some counters in that area," said Schubothe

For those participating, you better grab a notepad.  That's because Harv says the South Coast has one of the highest species counts of up to as many 150 due to our unique location and terrain.

"The fact that we're on the coast gives us a lot of different shore birds but again we extend into the valley so we get a lot of ducks and waterfowls we get in the rivers."  Schubothe adds, "Then you get a little bit higher and get a lot of raptor activity, so you know, the eagles and the hawks."
