Coos Bay - The Coos Bay Schools free lunch program is in full swing, and it's not only giving kids a good meal, but it's helping families bond together during the summer.

Monday marked the start of the annual program where kids ages 18 years or younger can get a bite to eat for free at Blossom Gulch Elementary School or Madison Elementary School.

A typical meal consists of a hot entree like pizza, or a cold sandwich plus fruits, vegetables and milk.

Coos Bay Schools started the program since they saw a significant need for kids to have adequate nutrition while they aren't in school. Many kids come with their parents, since adult meals are only a $1.

"Last year, I was most of these lunches, and I saw the same families coming over. One mom might bring kids from several different families," says Food Service Director Tim Watson-Williams. "It really becomes a part of their day. Kids have a good time and they get a free meal."

He also says many families plan their day around the free lunch hour.

"It breaks up the day for the kids," says Coos Bay parent Kari Lahr. "It helps with the food bill in the summer. We play at the playground, at the school or walk to the library. It helps fill their day."

Last year, the program served 6,500 meals over the summer. The program will run until August 17, Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to Noon.
