Culinary showdown raises $3,000 for area youth
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, Ore. - It was a culinary showdown at the Mill Casino-Hotel Sunday, as four teams of junior chefs went head to head in a first of it's kind charity competition. A large crowd of spectators filled the Salmon Room for the first annual Charitable Culinary Quick Fire Challenge, hosted by the Mill Casino and the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. Junior chefs from North Bend High School teamed up with a partner from OCCI, and had two hours to create a dish from mystery ingredients, for judges. Mill Executive Chef Dan Catanio says the idea for the challenge came from a popular series on TV today. "As you well know, Iron Chef America, is so big and so huge, that i thought, you know it would be a fun thing to have something like that in our community. And then maybe turn it into a nice fundraiser to help these kids get some funding for their program to continue, buying things to make entirely different dishes and things like that, so that's the idea." The event raised $3,000 that will go to benefit the North Bend High School Culinary Program, and the Boys and Girls Club Culinary Scholarship Fund. Each competitor also went home with a trophy at the end of the competition. Most Popular |
