Youngsters enjoy tango tunes from harmonica
By Nicole Plascencia KCBY NewsHAUSER, Ore.- KCBY caught up with harmonica player Joe Powers at the North Bay school over in Hauser Tuesday morning. Powers played a little bit of every thing for the youngsters, from polka to his own version of harmonica hip hop. The virtuoso began playing the instrument a the age of 2 and has been playing ever since. Powers says while playing for kids can be a challenge it's one he welcomes. "I want them to hear a wide range of music just to kind of expose them to some things that they might not normally hear. I didn't hear tango music until I was in college for example," says Powers. Powers is visiting with more than 2,000 students in Coos County thanks to the Oregon Coast Music Association. Board member Suzanne Goodman says this KinderKonzert Program is exciting for one reason in particular, "A harmonica is very accessible, they're not expensive, it's portable and it's, I think, a nice introduction to music." A goal of the Oregon Coast Music Association is to enrich the community through music and take it into schools. Powers will close out his tour of Coos County March 4 in Coquille |
