NORTH BEND, Ore. -Taking heart in the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child," folks come out drop off all infant to toddler essentials during this weekend's seventh Annual Community Baby Shower.

There's no doubt that, that little bundle of joy can also bring with him or her a bundle of bills. And helping to assist families in a financial crunch are once again the Department of Human Services and Bay Area's Soroptimist International.

Held at the Pony Village Mall in North Bend on Saturday, people came by to make cash donations or to deliver diapers, clothing and everything in between for the DHS Community Baby Closet.

According Coos Bay's Soroptimist President, Nichole Hoffman, these items are not a luxury but a necessity for many local families.

"It's for people who are just needing that case of diapers to get by or that package of wipes to get by," said Hoffman. "You know, when people are having to choose between diapers and food, it's nice to have a resource to not have to make that decision."

Anywhere from 50 to 100 low-income families take advantage of this assistance annually. The DHS Community Baby Closet is located inside the Newmark Center in North Bend. If you missed out this weekend's baby shower, donations are always gladly being accepted there.
