MHS and NBHS unite for possible 3A Basketball Tournament
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. -Marshfield and North Bend are used to facing off on the basketball court but now they are working together to try and bring the 3A State Tournaments to the Coast. Still in the brain-storming stages, Marshfield High School Principal Greg Mulkey says it's an idea they've been considering ever since the 3A Playoffs were moved to Willamette University a few years ago. Surrounded by a big 3A community, including Coquille, Bandon and Myrtle Point, Mulkey says they not only have the backing but the drive to make this tournament special. But first they must prove it's economically viable for the OSAA to switch venues. "The bottom line in this whole thing is we have to show and prove that we can save money from the current location and venue," said Mulkey. "And if we can do that, then I mean, it would be very difficult I think for the Executive Board of the OSAA to say no to us." The 3A Classification has grossed, on average, $30,000 a year over the last three years. That prompted Mulkey, along with Marshfield and North Bend Athletic Directors, Bryan Trendell and Boyd Bjorkquist, to consider what pre-selling tournament tickets would do. The 16 boys and girls tournament teams would also have twice the gym space, saving time and money. According to Mulkey, "We're working on how it would fit between North Bend and Marshfield, the games, where they would be played and so on. The other thing is we believe we can do it in three days with two gyms. See right now Willamette is one gym and if we have two gyms, we would be able to cut down one day. We'll there's a cost savings right there." They will present their plan to the OSAA next Monday, March 15, needing approval before they could go to the Executive Board in April. |
