NB hops on board with 2012 Overlay Project
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, Ore. -With a big paving project for parts of North Bend in the works from ODOT, the city eyes an opportunity. ODOT plans a Highway 101 Overlay Project in 2012, working South of the McCullough bridge to the Coos Bay Cuplet. They will repave, upgrade signals, reconfigure lanes and work on drainage problems. The Bike and Pedestrian Program also chipped in on the $4.5 million project to fund sidewalk repairs. But while ODOT is targeting things in poor condition, the City sees an opportunity to add on. ODOT's Project Manager, Mark Leedom says they're looking at roughly $150,000 for sidewalk repairs and curb extensions, at some of their busier intersections. "The number one purpose is to shorten the distance of crossing the roadway," said Leedom. "They also provide some visual clue to drivers to slow down." City Administrator, Jan Willis added, "We don't want them to impede traffic, get in the way of businesses access to their buildings but reasonably located, it makes sense." While the numbers will fluctuate, depending on the number of sidewalks, the City sees potential savings in their downtown reconfiguration. And at a Work Session Monday, the councilors were encouraged to take advantage. "The street-scape is a project you have identified after your Waterfront, so the more we can do with this project, the better," said Willis. Mayor Rick Wetherell agreed. "It's a wonderful opportunity for us. As Jan said, since it's happening to get on board and make it work for everybody." The council will discuss the figures and necessity of sidewalk repairs before ODOT finalizes their overlay project. |
