Jazz festival introduces kids to joy of music
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. - The South Coast Clambake Jazz Festival isn't until this weekend, but area students got a sneak peak of what's to come, as one featured band made the rounds to Coos Bay schools Thursday, performing some of their music. Idaho based group "High Street" rocked the gym at Sunset Middle School, playing music from the 40s all the way up to the 90s for Sunset and Madison students. "Anytime we have an opportunity to bring music into the schools and make the schools more of a community and make that connection it's great. I think it's really important to have a diverse appreciation for all kinds of music, music's in all of us," says Sunset Principal Dale Inskeep. "It's really fun, these kids get us really fired up. When we show them that playing the trumpet and saxophone and trombone and percussion and wearing zoot suits is fun, and they have a blast, then it awakens them to a much broader musical spectrum," says High Street band member Matt Summers. |
