COOS BAY, Ore. - Come 2011, the landscape at Bay Area Hospital will begin to change.

That's because this month, the hospitals Board of Directors approved a facility expansion and modernization project, that will cost approximately $39 million.

"It's a 97,000 square foot expansion of the facility, it's a four level building expansion," says CEO Paul Janke.

The new building will be located where the hospital's north parking lot is currently.

Janke says it will feature a new critical care unit, a new 30 bed medical surgical unit and a new outpatient area.

"The real focus of the project is to improve patient care and really improve patient safety. If you look over the last 15 to 20 years, so much has changed as to how patient care is actually provided."

The hospital currently operates 128 beds, following the expansion, it will have 136 beds.

Janke says it's been at least ten years since the facility has had any major upgrades.

"We very much want to go through a very thoughtful period of planning. We want to get it right when we build out this space, so we're not anticipating breaking ground for 12 to 14 months from now."

The project will be broken up into two phases, the first of which will be the construction phase, followed by a renovation phase.

"Our intention, after the end of what we're anticipating to be a three year project, is to go back and to renovate existing patient units to make them all private rooms and to really upgrade both the nursing units and support space."

Janke says the hospital will use $18 million in funding from reserves, $18 million in borrowed money and $3 million from fundraising efforts and grants to pay for the project.

The next step will be planning and design before breaking ground in mid-2011.
