Community takes advantage of prescription drug turn-in event
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, Ore. - Folks were dropping off bag fulls of old prescription meds at North Bend City Hall this weekend, taking part in the first ever statewide prescription drug turn-in. North Bend joined some two dozen other cities across the state for the drug turn-in program to collect unwanted and expired drugs. North Bend Police Officer Milo Arnesen, says disposing of prescription drugs properly is very important. "When prescription medications are left in medicine cabinets, they're accessible by children, they can also be dangerous for adults when the labels are misread. Oftentimes people dispose of them, and while disposing of them, they'll flush them down the toilet, throw them out with the trash, then those chemicals are put into our landfills or our water systems," says Arnesen. After all the medication is collected, it's secured by police in a closed off area, and then eventually taken to a dump site to be incinerated. Sponsoring group Oregon Medical Association Alliance, hopes to make this an annual event statewide. |
