MHS Upbeats prepare for state competition
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. -In a year of challenges and new opportunities, the Marshfield High School Upbeats put aside their cheer routines and turn their focus to dance, as they prepare for this weeks State Dance Competition. With fierce faces and lots of attitude, the Upbeats have been putting in long hours to perfect their routine. According to Coach Debbie Brown, the dozen dancers are behind step to most of the teams in their small 5A Division, due to the fact that this year, unlike any other, the girls split their season between cheerleading and dance. That changed the way they approached this state competition said Brown. "It changed dance for us because we weren't as trained going into competitive season so we switched to this routine, which is more precision jazz, very strong movement, more in line with what we did for cheerleading." Now while Senior Captains Paige Molzahn and Lindsey Bunnell tell us this wasn't what they expected for the season, they're using their cheer moves to their advantage. And with choreographed beats to Janet Jackson's Scream, they're likely to scare the competition away. "We were hoping for the slow music, the pretty dresses and now we have the mean make-up and mad faces," said Bunnell. Molzahn added, ''But we are so glad because everyone in our division is dong what we had hoped to do, so if we would have done that, we would have been like everyone else and our lack of technique would have shown so much more." "And we love it, yeah, we love our routine," they both agreed The Upbeats will be the first team to perform this Friday, March 19, at the Rose Coliseum in Portland, starting at 4:30 pm. They're likely to perform again the following day. But before then, you can catch their dress rehearsal Tuesday, March 16, inside Hoffine Court at Marshfield, beginning at 7 pm. |
