COOS BAY, Ore. - Hundreds of area high schoolers were at Southwestern on Wednesday, for an event aimed at teaching them some valuable life lessons.

The students were at the college for the annual Coos County Youth Summit, a project sponsored by the Commission on Children and Families.

For the past six months, student reps from various high schools around Coos County, have been planning the event, which focuses on bringing positive life lessons to area youth.

This year the theme is 'iDecide,' which Youth Summit Chair Audrey Moss-Strong says has a very specific meaning.

"The purpose is to make people realize that they can make a difference in their own lives. I think a lot of kids that go to school think that everything is just decided for them. That's why we chose the theme 'iDecide,' because they need to know that this is their life and even though they are going to have people working over them in their life, they need to decide for themselves and take initiative."

During the day long event students heard from keynote motivational speaker Keith Hawkins.

Students also got the chance to break attend break-out sessions, to learn about everything from preparing for college, to how to become a leader, and how to stand up to peer pressure.

This is the ninth year this event has taken place.
