Powers teenager living with FAS learns to channel stress through music

Powers - For any child living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, the outside world can be a stressful place, but one Powers teenager living with FAS has learned how to channel that stress through music.

Morgan Fawcett first came into contact with the Native American flute a year and a half ago while on a trip through California.

Since then Fawcett, a member of the Tliingit Haida Tribe, has been teaching himself how to play the instrument, as well as learning various techniques from Native American flute performers.

"After a while, stress builds up. I'm a little more sensitive to stress and most FAS children are and since you pick up on that, you need a way to get rid of it. When I play the flute, the stress level goes away so I can function better," says Fawcett.

Fawcett has also become a spokesperson of sorts for FAS disorder, teaching other kids with the disorder how to channel their stress through the flute.

Both Fawcett and his grandmother will be making a trip in September to Alaska to take part in a conference on FAS.

"All the flutes that we're donating we're actually taking up to the children of my community at the conference. I will teach them through a series of workshops, to play the flute and spread awareness on FAS."

Fawcett will be performing at Cicarelli's Restaurant in North Bend this Friday and Saturday, August 17Th and 18Th.
