GOP law professor wins Ore. Senate primary

(AP) - Jim Huffman, a law professor and newspaper essayist, has won Oregon's Republican Senate primary, setting up a contest with Democrat Ron Wyden, who's seeking his third full term. In a field of eight candidates, Huffman had 42 percent of the vote with 65 percent of the expected vote counted. His closest opponent, Loren Later, had 15 percent. Wyden faced two primary opponents but won easily. He has amassed $3.7 million in his campaign treasury, compared with $344,000 Huffman has raised. Huffman had the backing of party leaders. He teaches at Lewis & Clark College. This is his first run for public office. Wyden is widely favored to win in November in Democrat-leaning Oregon. |
