Beautify Your Boat Basin
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsCHARLESTON, Ore. -Charleston's Boat Basin and surrounding area got a little extra attention this weekend, as neighbors, business owners, and local organizations came out to pick up trash and re-plant flowers and vegetation. Catching a brief break from the rain, a dozen or so volunteers participated in the 4th Annual SOVL Cleanup, "Beautify Your Boat Basin." It's a partnership between the South Slough Estuary Reserve and Charleston Community Enhancement Corporation, to clean up the Marina, Hallmark Creek and the surrounding tide flats, as well as the Downtown Area. Deborah Rudd with the South Slough Estuary Reserve, filled us in on what was being done on Saturday. "Removing invasive species from areas that tend to take over the native plants and mostly picking up trash and also just educating volunteers about why it's important to keep your watershed clean, because this is where we live, eat and play." The Hallmark Creek zone is of particular interest for the Estuary Reserve, as they work to build up the banks with more beneficial plants and rid the area of invasive species like scotch broom. According to Rudd, "It's what's called a Riparian Zone, which is an area that's near a body of water. This is the opening to the South Slough Estuary but this is habitat for a lot of wild birds and animals and we're planting some native plants just to add more habitat for the native wildlife that's here." The Port of Coos Bay and the Coos Watershed Association also partnered with this project. They would like to remind residents that all of Coos County is a Watershed, and it's important for everyone to protect it and clean up after themselves. Most Popular |
