NORTH BEND, Ore. -Rainfall and water run-off is a common occurrence here in the Northwest but a local non-profit organization is trying to protect the water ways along the South Coast from being inundated with pollutants, through an educational workshop.

Hosted by the Coos Watershed Association, interested community members, as well as environmentalists and engineers came to a Stromwater Solutions workshop held at the Mill Casino Hotel last week.

The introductory lecture included ways for folks to reduce pollutants and toxins from flowing into the drains and other bodies of water.  Some examples included a rain garden, where the plants would absorb some of the pollutants naturally and reduce the amounts of sediment in pipes.

Event coordinators also pointed out new developments, like the Coos Bay Fire Station, that has been built to deal with surface run-off.  They add, local government can also help encourage innovation as well.
