Battle for top dog
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY NewsBANDON, Ore. - It was a battle for top dog this weekend, at an annual dog show in Bandon. Hundreds of dogs of all shapes, sizes, and colors, put on their game faces and were groomed to perfection, all vying for a chance to be best in show. "It's like a beauty contest," says Coos Kennel Club Vice President Linda Culver. 550 dogs, representing 155 different breeds, strutted their stuff for the judges on Saturday during the Coos Kennel Club's annual Dog Show. "Each breed has a breed standard and judge rates do in it's breed," says Culver. Look for a mutt, and you won't find one in the crowd. All the dogs are pure-bred and American Kennel Club registered, in other words, they aren't amateurs. "You're kinda nervous to begin with, there's a lot of competition," says Lakeside Resident Lisa Johnson. Johnson has been showing French Bulldogs for the past few years. She says preparing for a show takes a lot of work, but she has it down to a science. "Wee take a fifth wheel to the show, we make sure we do a lot of grooming." Johnson says even her dogs know when it's time to compete. "My older ones get excited when they see me get out the grooming materials." But no matter how excited they may get, when they're in the ring, it's showtime. This event is also a fundraiser for the Bandon High School football team and cheer team. |
