Making a difference, a church calls volunteers to North Bend
By Tim Novotny KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, ORE - The northern gateway to the City of North Bend is looking noticeably better after a large number of volunteers from Brookings to Florence spent a day sprucing up the area. For the third year in a row, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints chose to commemorate their Pioneer Day by tackling a service project on the coast. After previous projects in Port Orford and Coquille, the Church joined forces with the City of North Bend this year to work on their Simpson Park and Ferry Road Park on Saturday, July 24th. At Ferry Road they cleared trails, used weed-eaters, chopped things down and picked up litter. While Simpson Park had a number of shelters and picnic areas that needed roofing and painting, with the City providing those materials. There was also a lot of work along Highway 101 as brush was cleared away. Brian Brink, a Bishop with the LDS Church, says that while this was headed up by their Church, volunteers were sought from all over and from all faiths. "We Make a Difference and help the strapped cities, you know the money's tight these days, and it gets everybody involved. We're doing a good deed and we invite everybody." Local business Firestone Enterprises also stepped-up to help out by donating work and a chipper to help the cause. Afterward, an estimated two hundred or so tired volunteers gathered at Simpson Park for a pot-luck meal. Brink says the planning for the next Make a Difference project will begin right away. |
