Paper.. or Reusable bags

COOS BAY, Ore. -Forget paper or plastic for one large merchandiser, it's all about reusable bags.  And if the feedback proves to be positive for the Portland based Fred Meyer chain stores, changes could be coming here too.

Bagging up groceries in Coos Bay last week, checkers tell us about 70% patrons opt out for plastic but the trend to bring reusable bags is growing.

That change is going to happen faster for Portland shoppers though, as store representatives say starting August 1, they are no longer offering customers plastic bags.  Paper bags will still be available but with an emphasis on shopping with reusable bags.

If the plastic bag ban is well received, Fred Meyer stores across the state could also join in.  So we caught up with some local shoppers to see if they'd favor or bag this ban.

According to local shopper Steve Ponich, "I just think its an oil based product and we're throwing it away and, you know, trying to make the environment healthier so anything we can do to get away from oil-based products has to help."

Brianna Patnote also prefers reusable bags.  "It'd be better because plastic bags always break for me, cause we usually bag a lot of cans so they fall through the bag and it gets me really irritated cause I have to pick them up."

For the most part, customers seemed open to the change but opted for the convenience of plastic when it's available.

While this ban is only taking place in Portland, store representatives say they're always accepting customer feedback, which you can leave a comment at E-mail bagsfeedback@fredmeyer.com
