Basketball could bring in the bucks
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, Ore. -Call it a bank shot. The recent news that a State basketball tournament is coming to the South Coast is fun for fans but could prove profitable for area businesses. The influx of teams and their families coming into Coos Bay/North Bend for the 3A State Playoffs could be anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 people, says Director of Promotions at the Visitor and Convention Bureau, Katherine Hoppe. That means big business for local eateries, hoteliers and shops. Travel Salem says losing this tournament, will be a loss of about $450,000 in revenue but Hoppe thinks that's even a low estimate. "We see that as an opportunity that, that's dollars that will come into our community, but we really think it's going to be a little higher that that, that's a very conservative estimate" said Hoppe. "We think it will be more like $750,000 coming into the community. And this is something that's committed to us for two years and we're hoping it stays here much longer. But to keep the teams and families happy, Hoppe says it needs to be a community wide project, starting with business store fronts. "We're going to be asking businesses to put up signs to welcome the teams," said Hoppe. "One of the things that's been missing from this tournament is really a home-town atmosphere. and we want to provide that and make sure they feel like stars in our community, so businesses will have the chance to put up signs supporting a specific team, rooting them on and just letting them know we're happy they're here." The tournament will take place at both North Bend and Marshfield High School Gymnasiums, between March 3-5, 2011. |
