COOS BAY, Ore. - A California woman died after falling down a steep bank along a river east of Coos Bay on Thursday afternoon.

First responders got the call at 2:23 p.m. and responded to find the woman in her 50s dead from severe head trauma.

The sheriff's office identified her as Brooke Alexander, 53.

The sheriff said the woman and a 67-year-old man, both from Burbank, California,  were staying on property in the area.

The two had gone down to the West Fork of the Millicoma River to do some fishing.

The two separated near the old fish hatchery.

As the man climbed back up the trail from the river, he noticed the woman had fallen down a steep embankment and was injured.

The man drove 3 miles back down the road to the nearest phone to call 911 for help.

By the time first responders arrived, the woman had died from her injuries.
