Learning about Memory loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's

NORTH BEND, Ore.- Community members get informed about a local disease that is affecting more people than we think.

Thursday afternoon, an unexpected amount of community members made there way over to the Bay Area Hospital's Community Health Education Center to attended a seminar- "The Basics": Memory loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Facilitator of the event, Sarah Austin tells KCBY, by the time people turn 85, over half of them will have Alzheimer's and it is something that needs to be discussed.

"There is more and more Alzheimer's in younger and younger people. And there is a lot of shame with it. People don't want to embrace the fact that they are living with someone with Alzheimer's. So, to know that there is a network in the community of other people who are suffering from Alzheimer's," says Austin.

Thursday's class was hosted by Michael Cross from Eugene, and he gave community members tips on how to diagnose Dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as well as how you can find resources.

"You think of cancer and there's tons of resources, tons of people that step out and say, "I have cancer. Can I come along side you?" and we are trying to facilitate that here in the area, and that people are more willing to come along side each other and support each other in the disease" continues Austin.

Every third Thursday of the month, Austin hopes to hold this seminar with new speakers and more attendees.
