Coos Bay schools to return to 5-day school weeks

COOS BAY, Ore. -- COOS BAY, Ore. -- It's official: Coos Bay schools are moving back to a five day school week.
The school board voted 6-1 Monday night last night to approve the new schedule.
Coos Bay students will have a half-day of class on Fridays, getting out around noon.
The district moved to a four day week in 2011, to give teachers more development time.
James Martin, the board chair, says he felt the decision was what the public wanted. "The public seemed fairly, clearly in favor of returning to a 5-day week and for me, ultimately, the public confidence issue and giving a program that the community could embrace and really feel more confident in was the deciding factor," he said.
The superintendent will finalize the details at the next board meeting in April.
In a survey taken earlier in the year, half the faculty said they liked four days and the other half wanted five days.
IF they are adding lunch to the Friday early release day, it almost makes it worse because the kids are there for 3 hours, which means 1 hour of learning with two food breaks. While I am glad that the kids that get their two most nutritious meals of the day from school will be able to eat, I don't like that this is yet another expense to a 3 or even 4 hour school day. Breakfast, lunch, teachers, administrators, classified staff, buses to and from, utilities. A LOT of $$ for not much return.
A decision hasn't been made about which day will be early release. Many districts (like North Bend or Newberg) have early release Wednesdays.
They will be feeding lunch.
Its about time...
i agreeeeeee
I like the idea of 5 days for school but 3 hrs on friday is a waste of time and gas if going back too 5 days then go five days not 4.5 days
Am I the only one who Loved the 4 day week? I love having 3 day weekends with my kids every week! AND them returning to 5 days so they can go for 3 hours on Friday? ?? What a joke. ...
I went to a 4 a day high school and I'm 25.. I don't see a problem in it, but that was also in a smaller area and were there went as many kids that couldn't be trusted for a day, on their own or with one parent.
I agree with everyone else that says it isn't worth it to go at all on Fri. Should have left it the way it was. Just a BIG waste of time and money to do it this way!
the 3 hours on fridays isn't worth the time, money for busses etc. I feel the only ones getting ahead would be the teachers not the students... what happened to the slogan "STUDENTS FIRST" ... ya lets do the math...all day fridays or lets keep the kids home..
what's the point of them going for 3 hours? ok kids now that you've settled down lets do math... oh time to go home ... I like how they make sure they don't have to feed them lunch
AWESOME!!!!
Good I pay property taxes on two different propertys and They should be spending that money on schools my kid will still be home schooled due to the fact that coosbay schools are Crap but glad they are taking a step in the right direction
you mean, have kids actually in school for learning? How long has it been we decided scholl shouldn't happen? It's about time, but I hope the district actually does teach during these 5 days a week.
Yes my kids said its only till like 11:00 on Fridays....
Great, common sense must have prevailed.
*four
Thats what the world newspaper said, at least....
The story should probably specify thats its for and a HALF days. ()
Now hopefully they will stick to it an stop messing with the kids schooling. Its a good thing.
I really like this, best thing for our kids!!
Good about darn time!
