Dancing all the way to 100

LAKESIDE, Ore.- Natural foods, enjoying what you do and laughter seems to be the recipe to living a long and healthy life.

Verland Reavis was born November 29, 1911 and is celebrating a century of life today.

Family, friends and even the Lakeside Fire Department helped surprise Verland with a proper serenade.

Born in Eastern Colorado, Reavis, his late wife and three kids moved to the South Coast in 1945 and fell in love with Coos Bay known at the time as Marshfield.

"It's a beautiful spots to raise a family" says Reavis. "There is so much recreation that we all enjoyed. The beaches, the rivers, camping and we had great schools. Just really wonderful schools."

For 30 years Verland taught Geometry and Algebra at Marshfield High School and says the key to his success in the class room was respect.

"As long as you respect the students. Which you expect them to respect you. It works."

Of course we had to get some tips on how to live a long, healthy life and Verland gives credit to the natural food he eats.

He also says it is all about your attitude.

"Keep smiling. It works. And I think one has to enjoy what they do. Enjoying their work. Which I did."

Ever since he was a little boy, Verlin has also enjoyed putting on his dancing shoes and hitting the dance floor.

"The Waltz is the best. And the of course there's the Fox Trot. I like the Fox Trot. I hope my legs will let me dance tonight. I think so."

The birthday celebration is not over just yet.

Verland will dance the night away with family and friends at the Eagles Lodge in Coos Bay.
