Dive team recovers Coos Bay man's body from lake

FOUR MILE LAKE, Ore. - Divers recovered the body of a Coos Bay man from the middle of a lake near Mount McLaughlin Monday.

Andrew S. Kaufman, 61, was last seen Friday, Aug. 17.

A campground host reported a camper was missing Thursday, Aug. 23.

Kaufman was camping alone, and witnesses said the man may have gone for a hike or taken his raft out on the lake.

Over 50 people searched for Kaufman on the ground, from the air and by boat while invesitgators interviewed dozens of potential witnesses.

Klamath County Dive Rescue volunteers studied hundreds of sonar images of the lake. On Monday night, they identified an image that showed the possible location of a body.

Divers took to the water in the middle of the lake and recovered Kaufman's body from about 85 feet of water just before 7 p.m.

There is no sign yet of his raft, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators are calling Kaufman's death an apparent drowning.

The sheriff's office would like to talk to more witnesses.
