Earthquake swarm a few miles off Oregon Coast

COOS BAY, Ore. - A swarm of 7 small earthquakes rattled the ocean floor less than 20 miles off Gold Beach on the Oregon Coast Tuesday.

The quakes ranged in strength from 2.1 to 3.0 on the Richter scale and were far enough off shore that coast residents wouldn't feel the shaking, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Seismologists also told KCBY News in Coos Bay the activity - which comes after a week with almost one small earthquake per day - is not a sign that the "Big One" is coming.

Researchers at Oregon State University on Wednesday announced findings, however, that the Coos Bay area faces a risk of a megaquake in the next 50 years.
