Empire woman tries to get deputy to shoot her
By Angela Lauren, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. - Coos County Sheriffs are saying tonight, thanks to their training one woman is treated for her mental stability, rather than losing her life. At around four a.m. Wednesday morning, Coos County dispatch received a call from a woman in Empire claiming she had killed a man in her home. When officers got on scene, the woman came from the back of the home and tried to get the deputy to shoot her. Sgt. Pat Downing with Coos County Sheriffs tells KCBY, "some of her actions indicated to him that she was trying to get the officer to engage her and possibly shoot her. I believe that is probably why the call came in initially. It was so they would have a response like that with one of our officers." After some investigation, officers learned the man that had been living at the home recently died. Cops say the woman admitted to using methamphetamine which they believed caused her to be suicidal. Downing says because of their extensive training sponsored by the mental health department, officers were able to access the situation and get her under control. "Any type of report of violence, our officers are going through a process while they are getting there to make sure they are mentally prepared, they are ready to deal with whatever situation arises when they get there. So, our officers did that this morning," explains Downing. The woman was taken to Bay Area Hospital and placed on a mental hold. And because she was not charged with anything, it is KCBY's policy to not release her name. Most Popular |
