Expert suggests exterior changes to The Egyptian
By Brie Thiele, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. - A historic preservation professional came through town Wednesday to give the Egyptian Theater Preservation Association some pointers on fixing up the Egyptian. First and foremost, George Kramer believes the outside is not really an accurate representation of how wonderful the theater is on the inside. He suggests a number of small projects to make visible changes to the exterior, starting with the marquee. "I don't think the marquee you have, is the marquee I think the Egyptian deserves and I look at that with the reverse angle and the down lights that are on the inner side of the marquee, and I think it doesn't really speak to the interior or the period. I don't know why they changed it that way. I know some of you probably grew up with it when they did it and that's the Egyptian you think of," explains Kramer. He thinks the marquee cavity should be explored because he believes the original structure is still in place. Secondly, he says he's not crazy about the 1950's colored tile that flanks the structure. "It's kinda cool for what it was, but it isn't marring well. There's a lot of water damage to the bottom, it's gonna cost a lot of money to create tiles to repair it or fix it, and I think you might find something better to do with those funds," says Kramer. All in all, if the association decides to take his advice, Kramer says it's important to respect the past but create a future that can support Coos County. Most Popular |
