Standoff near school in Coos Bay ends peacefully
COOS BAY, Ore. - Police had their guns drawn and pointed at a home near Marshfield High School on Tuesday morning, as they negotiated with an armed man inside.
We now know the identity of the man. He is 22-year-old Matthew Rhoat.
A woman and child who were inside the 4th Street home got safely outside.
Police closed the intersection of 4th and Golden to secure the area and evacuated some nearby homes.
Family members and authorities talked to Rhoat in an attempt to resolve the standoff.
A crowd formed near the scene, which caused concern for police.
And as the standoff wore on, officials at Marshfield had to formulate a plan for what to do with students at the end of the school day if the incident had continued. Students were not allowed to leave for lunch.
The standoff ended peacefully shortly after 2 p.m., when police say Rhoat surrendered out the backdoor of the house.
KCBY News saw police removing what appeared to be a large rifle from the home.
Nobody was hurt during the nearly four-hour standoff.
Rhoat is charged with domestic assault and disorderly conduct. He was taken to Bay Area Hospital for mental health evaluation.
Who was it? Â I read on a couple FB posts it was Matt Rhoat. Â
What is wrong with people? This is how many standoff suicides this year? Makes me worry about children's safety in the area. Why didn't anyone pick up on this guys instability sooner? Does it take someone to kill a child or themselves before people realize that people need help?
