Jeff Venable approaches the McCullough Bridge

COOS BAY, Ore. - With one foot in front of the other, Jeff Venable kicked off his run across the country to support firefighters nationwide Monday.

Step by step, 35 miles per day, Venable plans to cross his own finish line on September 11 in New York City.

"If you're running across the country, start in the birthplace of Prefontaine," Venable said of his decision to begin in Coos Bay.

Coos Bay firefighters escorted Venable from downtown to the border of North Bend, where that city's firefighters led him to the McCullough Bridge for a farewell for a long journey ahead.

"I spent a month on the route," Venable said. "It's just so nice to finally lace up the shoes and go. I mean that's sort of what the dream is all about: to have people see what's going on and be a part of this run."
