NEWPORT, Ore. -- A drunk driver rolled a pickup truck with four other passengers inside early Friday morning after leaving a Newport-area tavern, police said.
The driver, identified as Michael Bart Brown Jr., 34 of Lebanon, was treated for minor injuries; the other four passengers refused treatment.
The incident started at around 1:30 a.m. when a Newport Police Officer saw a Ford pickup driving recklessly near 8th and Douglas Streets.
The officer lost sight of the truck and started to follow it in a police cruiser.
Shortly thereafter the officer said he found the truck laying on its side in the middle of Benson street (off of 8th Street). He added that the vehicle looked like it had rolled completely over before coming to a stop.
The five occupants were trapped inside the truck and had to be extracted by crews from Newport Fire and PacWest Ambulance.
Police interviewed the men after they were removed from the truck.
They learned that all the men had been drinking at a local tavern, and they were driving to the house of one of the passengers.
Officers took Brown to the hospital, where they conducted a DUII investigation. He was subsequently arrested for DUII, reckless driving and four counts of recklessly endangering.
He is lodged at the Lincoln County jail with bail set at $90,000.
