COOS BAY, Ore. -- A man posing as a deputy scammed at least one Coos Bay resident out of money, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said.
Victims were told they had a bench warrant out for missing jury duty, and they could offset the warrant by sending money to the deputy.
“One of the things they asked for in one of the calls was for the person to go get a gift card and send it. Put money on a visa card, a gift card and send that to the deputy,” said Coos County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Downing. “We would just like people to understand if they're getting calls from anybody that's asking for money or personal information that should be just a red flag right off the bat."
Anyone who gets a call from a scammer is asked to contact the Coos County Sheriff's Office.
