Man sentenced in DUII accident

COOS COUNTY, Ore. -- A 65-year-old Washington man will spend the next nine years in prison for a DUII accident that took place in Coos County in 2011.
Charles Maitland pleaded guilty to second degree assault, third degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants on Wednesday, as part of a plea deal for the crash that injured two Coos County workers.
In addition to 106 months in prison, Maitland will also have 36 months post-prison supervision.
The 2011 incident was settled this week, because Maitland fled Coos County after being charged and was recently found in Vancouver, Washington.
What does caring for his wife with cancer got to do with it? I'm sorry she was sick and passed away, but he made the choice to drink and drive! He took so much away from a man that was just trying to get home from a hard day's work and turned his life up side down! He has a lot of pain everyday and things he loved to do he can no longer do, due to his severe injuries! I see him suffer everyday and I hate it. It was a choice and a bad one at that! I know all of this because the man he hurt is my Husband! What if it would of been your Family?
He is still drinking and needs the help i think with good behavior he will get out early maybe 4 yrs but time to sober up for sure ,
Not only that, he chose to be a coward and flee. He very purposely chose to hide assets so that the victim could not get restitution.
Absolutely NOT enough. The man that he injured had his life taken away from him. He can't walk without assistance, he cannot work at the job that he loved. He lives with constant pain. This was NOT a first DUII for this man. He also had a passenger who was a friend that he could have killed. Personally, there is no difference to me. You choose to drink and drive, just like choosing a weapon. You should not get any leniency. It isn't accidental when you CHOOSE to get behind the wheel after drinking.
I think its rreally sad. He is a very kind, gentle man that cared for his wife through cancer and lost her. I think that 9 years is steep but he could have killed someone.
