Devereux Center needs a hand

COOS BAY, Ore.- A little known non-profit agency in Coos Bay needs a helping hand.

Although the Nancy Devereux Center served 13-thousand meals last year to those in need they want to do more.

"We need donations because we need to be open more so that we can do a much better job at helping people and getting them back into the community," Melanie Harrison, Administrative Assistant at the center said.

Harrison says they are working on a limited budget and with no paid staff.

The Nancy Devereux Center helps people find housing, jobs and get the much needed mental health care so many of their patrons need. Those who are struggling can do laundry, shower, grab a warm sweater on a cold day and of course get a hot meal. All of the services the center provides are free.

"Some meals that people eat here this is their only meal of the day, this is the only hot meal they are going to get," John Leonard, executive chef at the center said. "A lot of it has to do with gratitude, most of the people here are just so grateful."

The center's fighting to get enough funding to be open more than three days a week. Currently they are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Nancy Devereux Center is always looking for support and volunteers. Contact the center to find out how you can help.
