North Bend parents sound off on school reconfiguration

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- Parents upset with plans to divide North Bend elementary school students up by their grade instead of location filled the North Bend Middle School cafeteria Monday night.

The reconfiguration plan would send kindergarten through second grade kids to Hillcrest elementary, and have all North Bend students from third through fifth grade to the North Bay school.

One parent told KCBY News that he feels parents are fighting an uphill battle. "It seems like they've already made the decision, and they're bringing it out to tell us about it rather than ask us as parents what we think about it," said Donald Peabody, the parent of a Hillcrest Elementary student. "I don't know why you would want to break something that is excellent. I don't know why you would want to punish the achievement they have at this school."

Some parents say they're concerned about classroom sizes, long bus rides and being separated from their children during a natural disaster.

If you would like to voice your opinion about the plan, more public meetings are scheduled for the 15th and 22nd of May.
