CAMAS VALLEY, Ore. -- Two people were seriously injured and a North Bend teen was cited for several offenses after a Wednesday morning crash on Hwy 42.
Oregon State Police and rescue crews were dispatched to a reported crash Wednesday morning at around 11:40 a.m. on Highway 42 near Singletree Road.
Authorities say a 1995 Ford Taurus station wagon being driven by Elise M. Grundy, 19, of North Bend, was westbound when it lost control, traveled into the eastbound lanes and collided with a 2005 Volvo station wagon driven by Charles Bates, 63, also of North Bend.
A witness told troopers that just before the crash happened, they saw the station wagon making dangerous passes in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed.
Bates had only minor injuries, but his wife Ingrid, 60, and Grundy were transported by Camas Valley Fire & Rescue ambulance to Mercy Medical Center with serious injuries.
Troopers say everyone involved were wearing seat belts and both vehicles' airbags deployed.
Grundy was cited by troopers with reckless driving, reckless endangering, third degree assault and driving uninsured.
OSP Patrol and Fish & Wildlife Division troopers responded to the crash and were assisted at the scene by Winston Fire Department, Camas Valley Fire & Rescue and ODOT.
SO GLAD your parents are okay Julie!!!! Big hugs to all of you!!!!
Oh my goodness Julie, I had no idea it was your parents, I am so glad they are ok
Julie Bates Carr... I hope your parents are doing ok... I know how car accidents can be...
This accident should never happened. A young girl chose to get in her car, drive uninsured, and drive highway 42 at 90 MPH and unfortunately hit my parents head on. I thank God that my parents made it out of the tangled mess that was left of their car. And that everyone involved made it out alive. This accident was not caused by "older driver" as said above. Last i looked being in your 60's is not old. It was a very scary day for all families involved. We are just thankful we get to have our parents alive with only a few scrapes, bruises, bumps, and broken bones.
I wasn't saying it was just about a piece of paper. The point I was trying to make is if you don't have insurance than you place a heavy burden on whoever is on the other end of your reckless driving. I gave an example of the possible costs and medical that can be associated with that situation.
Oh boy...
P.S. I hope EVERYONE involved is fine and some lessons were learned.
I think whether or not you are insured does not matter. It comes down to how you drive. If you drive reckless that means you have NO regards for who else could be on the road. Sorry but I'm not buying the whole "they are old" thing. They were in their 60s. That's not old. And especially since there was an eye witness saying she was making passes at a fast rate in a NO pass zone. Chalk it up to immaturity and move on.
Ya there are hundreds of thousands of unfortunate people such as yourself and to say that they were putting your lives in danger by not having driver insurance is just redic, the part that people put you in danger is careless driving, impaired driving, and old age possibly?? Hmmm... Not just simply cuz someone doesn't have a piece of paper with a policy number.. I think people being tested for their drivers license should have to go through a more extensive test... And elderly people should most deft have to take their tests more frequently because you loose motor functions and memory and even common sense with age.
I was going to head to Tenmile this morning, glad I postponed my trip!!!
I think it's perfectly okay to criticize someone who was putting other lives in danger. Especially when they cause an accident that could leave someone limbless, with huge medical bills, not to forget the possible expense of a new leg which ranges from $20k+. Not saying that this will happen in this particular situation but it happens and it leaves families devastated because of the debt they assume due to an uninsured motorist. As an amputee myself, I've learned of many, MANY amputees that became that way due to reckless uninsured drivers.
The road is much better than what it was in 1959 for sure. But people just don't realize how bad some of the areas are until they get to it especially when it is raining and slick. All the corners have speeds posted and the highway speed is 55 not 85 as some people drive it.
I was two cars behind the accident (about 3 minutes behind) headed to the coast. I would have never guessed the second car was a station wagon... The remains looked like a compact and I was certain that I had just seen the mangled mess of a double fatality accident. I too travel this highway very frequently and am amazed at the hurry far too many people are in on this road.
I've driven truck over that road off and on for 30 plus years...it should be respected, it's a dangerous highway.
Well we live over here on 42 and to everyone that drives it IT IS NOT A FREEWAY WITH FREEWAY SPEED LIMITS. If you can't drive the 55 mph then stay off the highway. This is what happens when you get in a hurry, the highway is wet and the wind is blowing and you have no control over your car. And why was she driving without insurance???? If the car is uninsured no drivers license. And if no drivers license, no insurance, then jail time is in order.
SAD
Its Oregon and the teen is 19 so parents should not be responsible.
Oh man! I drive that road twice a week, this makes me sick.
This is Oregon news.
Was this in WA, State or somewhere else for we have a North Bend up here!!!
If she was a teenager they should go after her parents for damages, I don't make much money but I'm a least got the minimum coverage for my car.
Why are people so ignorant as to sit around and criticize someone they don't even know? It doesn't matter who's at fault. Or who's to blame. It's a shame there was an accident period. Sad all the way around. Unless your a Cruel hearted closed minded individual.. No one said that it was okay for an uninsured motorist to drive..
That poor couple is going to be left with the bill because she was uninsured. It's upsetting! If you can't afford insurance, even liability, then don't drive because this happens! I hope that both of them will be okay though.
What a jerk
No driving for 19 years, time for him to grow up.
Oh no!
I live on Hwy 42. People drive it like its a damn race track! Very upsetting to see a couple injured because of another impatient driver...
I don't understand why people have to drive crazy. If you have to be somewhere at a certain time in leave early.
of course, uninsured...
Oh my God.
