OSP: Shots fired at wanted felon in Deadwood

EUGENE, Ore. -- A wanted felon is in custody after police followed up on a call that he threatened to kill a relative Friday afternoon. After arriving at the house in Deadwood (west of Veneta), police shot at the wanted felon who was armed with an assault rifle.

Two OSP officers and two Lane County Deputies arrived at the house at around 10 p.m., located off of Highway 36. The 53-year-old felon was believed to be armed and had threatened to kill a relative earlier that day.

Officers approached the house on foot in the dark. A barking dog alerted the wanted felon to the officer's presence and he came outside carrying an assault rifle. As the man walked down the driveway toward the officers, they turned on their flashlights and told the man to put down his weapon.

When the man turned toward the officers, one OSP trooper fired a single round missing the man. He dropped the assault rifle and was taken into custody without a struggle.

The man was taken to Lane County Jail on numerous charges including Felon in possesion of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, warrants for assault and a probation violation involving first degree rape.
