NEWPORT, Ore. - A man forced his girlfriend to give him the keys to her car and minutes later crashed the vehicle before fleeing the scene of the accident, Newport Police said.

Officers caught up with Joseph Dunmire, 49, (at right) after he got a ride from the crash scene, police said.

Dunmire was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Menacing. He is being held on $65,000 bail.

Police responded at 12:50 p.m. to a report that Dunmire had gone to his girlfriend's place of employment and threatened her until she gave him the keys to her 2007 Chevrolet Impala.

While responding to that report, officers got a report at 1 p.m. that the Impala had crashed on Big Creek Road next to a reservoir.

Officers and sheriff's deputies found the car overturned on the road and unoccupied.

Investigators learned Dunmire got a ride to a home on SW Surf Street, where they found him and placed him under arrest.
