Port of Coos Bay commissioner moving on

COOS BAY, Ore. -- Port of Coos Bay commissioner Donna Opitz is calling it quits and moving to a place where the beaches are a little warmer.

Opitz has served as secretery since March of last year, and has served on the Coos Bay School Board for over a decade.

She has lived in the area for nearly 30 years, but says the economic development in the area isn't what she thought it would be.

She says although she is disapointed in how the area has failed to grow, she believes projects like Jordan Cove will help. "All three of my children have had to move out of the area in order to get a job, and I've watched the school district enrollment decline," she said.

That being said, she still thinks there might be good things to come for the South Coast. "I believe firmly, the Coos Bay area, the county, is on the cusp of great things happening here. That will be the first step in multiple things to be occurring in development, in economic development, probably on the North Spit to start with and ancillary businesses that will come as a result."

Opitz says she is moving back to Hawaii.
