Sheriff: Man arraigned for trying to light roommate on fire in Yachats

YACHATS, Ore. -- A man tried to light his roommate on fire after hitting the victim multiple times at their residence near Yachats, Lane County Sheriff's officials said.

Byron McArthur, also known as Buddy Valentine, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, first degree assault, and arson Monday for allegedly attacking his roommate, Herbert Purol. County officials said he didn't enter a plea during the arraignment.

Purol told deputies that he was listening to music in the living room when around 11:30 a.m. Friday, Valentine started hitting him with objects and doused him in lighter fluid.

Purol was taken to Sacred Heart at Riverbend with multiple injuries. The Sheriff's office doesn't know his current condition.

Deputies found Valentine on Sunday after getting a tip that he was staying at a vacant house off of Tenmile Creek Road near milepost 4. He was booked at the Lane County Jail for attempted murder assault 1, arson 1, burglary 2, and fugitive from justice.

Valentine's next court appearance is scheduled for September 8.
