South Coast Celebrates MLK

NORTH BEND, Ore.- Today marks what would have been Martin Luther King Junior's 83rd birthday, and here on the coast people celebrated the human rights activist.

Sponsored by The Human Rights Advocates of Coos County, the annual "Doctor King Celebration" brought community members to Pony Village mall to remember his legacy.

"People who were born later in the century that I was forget who he is and what he has done for all of us. And his legacy lives on when we celebrate him" says Anita Coppock, Secretary for The Human Rights Advocates of Coos County.

The event was filled with live music, video presentations on human rights, war and poverty and a reminder to everyone of their 30 human rights.

But the highlight of the event was the presentation of the Lilah Bidwell Human Dignity Award.

This years recipients are John and Margaret Jones with Myrtle Wood.

They received the award from last years recipient, Judy Moody.

"They were chosen because of their stand for human rights. For standing up for everyone's rights. A variety of peoples right. That's why they were chosen this time" says Coppock.

If you missed the event, Pony Village Mall has art work on display from students in the area, and Coppock reminds everyone to mark their calendars for next years celebration on January 21st.
