South Coast DUII team make several arrests over holiday

COOS COUNTY, Ore. -- Officers and deputies were out in force over the Thanksgiving holiday looking for drunk drivers, and the Coos Bay Police Department says it paid off.

During the long weekend four different departments making up the Southern Oregon Coast DUII Task Force put out extra patrols to crack down on impaired drivers.

Police officers from the Coos Bay Police Department, North Bend Police Department, Coquille Police Department and deputies from the Coos County Sheriff's office say they made 4 DUII arrests and 4 other significant arrests resulting from traffic stops.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9,878 people were killed in DUII related crashes in 2011.

The Southern Oregon Coast DUII Task Force has joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Oregon Impact, along with Coos County and other local law enforcement partners in conducting the campaign against impaired driving.

The weekend featured high visibility enforcement, combined with a variety of outreach activities including a multi-million dollar national advertisement and media campaign.
