"There are bigger fish to fry, but the smaller fish need to be attended to"
By Angela Lauren, KCBY NewsCHARLESTON, Ore.- Tensions are running high in Charleston today as fisherman try to declare the salmon season a disaster, and request the disaster relief they feel is necessary to survive. Charleston fisherman gathered to brain storm ideas on how to push legislators for disaster relief money from previous years, and declare 2011 a disaster as well. Unfortunately they are receiving answers they do not want to hear. Jim Moore, Chairman of The Oregon Alliance of Sustainable Salmon Fisheries says, "The opinion and mood of the state and federal legislators are that with these tough economic times, it's not difficult but it's going to be impossible to get funding for the salmon fleet, for failed fisheries." Moore continued on to say he understands there are bigger fish to fry, but the smaller fish need to be attended to. Salmon trollers were faced with a three month closure in 2005, an almost total closure in 2006, a dismal harvest in 2007, total closure in 2008 and 2009 and an extremely poor harvest in 2010 an 2011. "The salmon fleet as we know it is not going to exist" continues Moore. "The salmon patrol fleet brings in millions of dollars/ money into our local economy that largely all stays here. All spent in our hometown" exclaims J.D. Evanow with the Crab Shack in Charleston. So the question is- where do they go from here? Moore recommends they all come together and send personal letters to state and federal representatives to get the severity of the situation know. Most Popular |
