Man from Coos Bay found dead in truck in creek

ALBANY, Ore. - A Coos Bay man died after suffering a medical problem and driving his semi truck off a road and into a creek Saturday morning, the Linn County Sheriff's Office said.

Steven Ames, 54, of Coos Bay was found dead inside the truck.

A passerby spotted the truck more than 10 hours after the crash. The engine was still running and in gear, with the wheels still turning.

The Mack truck was not pulling a trailer at the time of the crash.

The truck went up over a curb, clipped a power pole and went through a grassy field before coming to rest in a shallow creek at the bottom of an embankment, the sheriff's office said.

There were no skidmarks, and the sheriff said it appears Ames suffered a medical problem prior to the crash.

A HAZMAT team removed the diesel from the truck's fuel tanks. The sheriff said it did not appear any fuel leaked into the creek.

The crash remains under investigation pending further information from the Oregon Department of Transportation truck inspectors and the Medical Examiner's Office.
